In the industry of bathroom remodeling you have a limited number of options for a bathtub. You can replace, put in a liner, restoration, or resurfacing. Perma Ceram of Westchester Inc. uses primarily resurfacing, and in limited situations we also do bathtub restoration. Resurfacing is a technique, which was developed due to the high cost, and inconvenience of replacing a bathtub.
There are several advantages to resurfacing, of which the biggest is the cost. Save thousands of dollars as opposed to the price of replacement. Secondly is the short downtime. Our process takes as little as 1-3 hours to complete and you can have your bathtub ready for use the next morning. Secondly, and just as important, is there is NO MESS. We come in and do the job, and leave your bathroom just as clean as it was when we started. The only aftereffect is a like-new looking bathtub. Thirdly, there is no need to disturb any of the plumbing, or surrounding areas. as this work is ALL COMPLETELY done in its place.
Resurfacing, reglazing, and refinishing are all interchangeable terms for the same process. This process is where a chemical coating, most commonly epoxy, is applied over the existing finish of a fixture. Please understand, this IS NOT PORCELAIN. Porcelain is a much harder, more durable finish, which CANNOT be applied in a home due to the high temperatures required. Most commonly we can apply this process to bathtubs, tiles, sinks, and in some cases, floors. The process includes stripping, if needed as in the case of previously resurfaced (or painted in ANY WAY) fixtures, acid washing, sanding, and then masking the surrounding area, at which point we can apply a primer, (We choose to use a wipe-on style of primer) and 4 coats of the high gloss, sprayed on epoxy finish. After drying to the touch we unmask and caulk any applicable edges. Resurfacing tiles, each job must be evaluated individually, but the average sized bathroom (approx. 100 sq. ft. of tile) with a bathtub in the same color (If you wish we can do multiple colors) can be completed in as little as one day. We can resurface in a variety of colors based upon several of the major paint, or bath fixture manufacturers color charts, in some cases we can even match an existing color provided. We can apply this process to fiberglass, plastic, porcelain, and previously resurfaced bathtubs. We warranty our work for up to 5 years against peeling, cracking, crazing, or any workmanship defects. With proper care and maintenance your fixture can last 6-10 years. Proper care includes using ONLY non-abrasive cleaners, you may NOT use automatic shower cleaners, and should you find the need for using a matt for showering, you need to let the material cure for approximately 2 weeks and you MUST remove it after each use. If you are still concerned and do not wish to have the worry of removing the matt after each use, we have another option for you. We also offer a non-slip additive to our material for the bottom of your bathtub or shower stall.
